Evaluation

Brief

The production brief we were working on was to create the title and opening of a new fiction film. The title of a our film is called 'Walking with the Dead' we chose this title because our film is a horror/thriller and the title connotes with the fact of dead people being part of the film The film is about two people a boy called Harry and a girl called Grace, their parents had died in a car crash and ever since then strange things has been happening and disturbing things happening to the boy. The older sister tries to help her brother by getting him help to find the cause for everything. This leads to Harry becoming more dangerous to himself and others, Harry talks to a psychiatrist which does help him. Grace is then told she can take him home and he will be fine. It in the end they work it out that their mum was pregnant when she died and the child/spirit possessed the boy all along to torture the sister who caused her parents death. The ending is left open and knowing if the spirit has gone or not. The sub-genre for our film is paranormal thriller/psychological documentary.

Who would be the audience for your product?

For our film we decided the target audience would range from 16- 24. We aim for normal older students and adults that get a thrill from watching a horror film.We also thought that the age of the characters would influence the audience as having a young adult as the main character would draw in a certain type of audience. For our audience their media interest would not be into mainstream of music and films , they would most likely listen to individual music from low key group that doesn’t link in with mainstream pop.

For our pre-production we looked at different audiences and see what they prefered to see in a horror film we had also pitched our idea to the class and got feedback back for what they would like see in the film. This helped us to create a back story and an idea for the title sequence. We also researched other horror films and the title sequences, especially films related to ours with children and the whole twisted dark plot with it. When watching the videos it helped us to come up with what we would shoot for our title sequence and make sure certain key points where included in the films to really stand out in the title sequence.

The target audience we had in mind for this film is both young male and females that are young adults, they may be students at college or even working. We researched different films and looked at the response they got.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The media institution that we choose for our distributer was ‘Universal’ we though this would best fit our film as Universal is one of the biggest companies and most films have been successful within Universal. Universal also has a wide range of genre in there films and they have history of horror/thriller films so they would know how to manage a horror/thriller film like ours.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge form and conventions of real media products?

When we were filming our title sequence we purposely didn’t film any faces or the characters, only below the shoulder or sometimes in certain shots the audience would only see the back of the head. This was to make the main character more mystery and not give too much away about the boy at first. We used our storyboards to help us keep track on key shots that needed to take place when filming for example when opening a door and getting a close up of one side pushing the door opening and the other opening. The first shot was an establishing shot of the house by this the audience can see where this film is sort of set and what sort of lifestyle the main character is surrounded by. In certain parts of the title sequence we filmed bits by hand to make it feel as if you are actually there with the boy walking up the stairs. We always used a tripod to make sure the some shots were steady and smooth looking.

The typography was very easy for us all to decide in what we were going to look for. We thought a childlike handwriting would look very effective as it’s a main key point of the film with a child being possessed by another much younger child . We did originally want the childlike handwriting to be scratched on but then we decided to have the childlike handwriting to look more scratched and distorted, this suggests a hint of something wrong in the way the boy is.

The lighting was very tricky for us because we wanted to make it clear to the audience that its was normal bright and homely in the house but then the sudden change of the boys room being all dark and scary looking. Right at the start the first shot was of a house in the dark pouring rain this straight away indicates to the audience that the film is a dark and gloomy atmosphere type of film and not light hearted with comedy. the boys room we had a lamp on in the room and nothing else so it would create a dark look but still clear enough to the audience. This was all to create a huge contrast in what you don’t see from the boy straight away. From the outside of his room he looks normal but then we see behind closed doors that actually the boy has some serious issues deep inside of him.

The music was a challenge to find and make it fit with the title sequence. Originally I and made music but then Amy had found some music that fitted perfectly and only needed minor changes. The music is slow but it has jumpy and horrible suspence feeling in it which would intentionally make the audience feel uneasy and alert to watching what is happening. With the whole title sequence focusing on the boy the music on its own cleary indicates that this is some “wrong “ and strange about the boy.

How does you media product represent particular social groups?

We wanted the boy to come off at the beginning like any average young boy and to stick with stereotypes and not go against. This makes the audience feels like that this could of happened to them and to make it seem not too far fetched in the characters. By making the boy on the same level as an average boy by his body language and how relax he was at home and dumping his things on the floor like any typical boy it makes the whole media product more realistic to the audience. The props used are nothing to alerting at the start until he gets into his room and whole image of ‘average boy’ vanishes when he rips teddies apart and draws sinister pictures. We carefully thought of things that children use that are innocent belongings and then changed it to a twisted and dark thing that no one wants their children to be doing or drawing. This makes the audience completely change what they originally thought of the boy.

How did you attract/address your audience?

I think we reached our target audience because of the feedback we got from it was positive. We asked people what they enjoyed to see in horror films and looked at other films with similar plots and genre to see what the response was, this helped us to create a title sequence and plot that would grabbed the audiences attention. People have said that “The idea for the plot is very good” and “Wonder what would happen next’ this is good feedback and promising news. We did have some concerns like “Don’t make it too complicated for yourselfs when making it” but we did split the jobs up to make it easier to get the job done. The feedback of the final version was very good and they like the music and the ending part with the shadow. We did get a comment saying that the title sequence “creeped them out big time” which to me means we have done our job with making the title sequence uneasy and sending shivers down your back as the genre was horror.

To improve this we could of maybe added more disturbing things for the boy to do to really creep the audience out more but although it seems we have made a good job of

making the audience feels uneasy watching it.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

We learnt that we needed planned it all before in what we would use to film and edit the video on. We used my camera to film as we had a history of the school camera not working properly on the programmes we used. At it made it easier to us knowing that the footage would not be deleted in case we lost all footage of the computer. When editing the video we used Imovie for most of the editing and then Final Cut Pro as this programme is far more advanced for editing a thing like this. We learnt all new skills in editing with putting the writing onto the video in the font we had chosen and exactly where to place it. We learnt how to import music of the video and adding a beginning transition into a fade in shot from a black background. At one point we I used Garage Band to make music for the video but then we changed our minds in the music , however I did learn how to edit and make music which will come in handy with media in case we need a quick not copyright piece of music very quick. When editing the video on Imovie we shorten clips and edited them slower and changed the lighting on some this was successful production process on Imovie. However there was a less successful when Final Cut Pro we did find this hard to use but manage through some bits and the bits we couldn’t do we changed back to Imovie.

I personally have learnt the skills of adding writing to clip on Imovie and practially mostly all my skills on Imovie have advanced. I have learnt how to use Final Cut Pro as I have never used that before as well.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full production?

When looking back to the preliminary task I feel that the only thing successful about the task was managing to stick to the camera angle rules. Everything else just feel apart. We didn’t plan the filming properly and didn’t stick to the storyboards the editing then became hard work to try make it look right. Then there the surroundings we had the problem of background noise and conversation which really didn’t spoil our task. The last part was sharing responsibility, it did end up with some people literally just being there and saying things but not actually filming or editing or helping in any way.

We improved and learnt when making our title sequence, we really thought of post production this time and planning a lot more. We divided the jobs which made it easier and stuck to the storyboards so setting up for filming and referring back to it to make sure we filmed everything and got all footage so then this made the editing process a lot more easier. We made sure we had loads of footage to choose from so all shots ran smoothly together. We were aware of our surrounds making sure the angles where right and not shakey or off side at all .

All in all we learnt so much more from our preliminary task and to be honest without that first task I don’t think our title sequence would have been as successful as it became now.

Journal 14th Feb

Today we were given feedback about our title sequence in which we had made and we began to start to improve the points of the sequence in which we were told wasn't as good as others. We started to change the typography used for the names and the jump cuts in which were previously used.

Final Verison

Music
Today Amy decided that the music didn't go and decided to completely change everythng and start from scratch. We were origanally going to merge both versions together but instead she just did the sample version she choose earlier.

Universal Logo HD for the beginning of Title Sequence

We thought to make our title sequence look more professional we decided to added the Universal Logo to the final version of our title sequence.

Sample Music

Journal 8th Feb

In today's lesson we added the music in which Megan had created to the footage of our horror film title sequence. We listened to it a number of times to see how we could improve and change it, each we had done this we added it to our title sequence.

Music Sample

The soundtrack for the title sequence is mostly a slow paced piece.

At the beginning is started with rain that I used from Fx effects. Then I added a melody using classical piano samples from Garage Band. I used all different styles of music and tried to make the video more intense with the soundtrack. I mostly used different piano style like electronic and classical and deep electronic keyboard style.

Walking with the dead title sequence

This is the title sequence we made, but this is just music that we used for time being as we had to show the video to the class. The music is finished but needs to be uploaded but apart from that we are mostly finished.

Research into casting

Journal 31st

Today we decided to go through the edited version of the title sequence and see if we could change any of the footage we had. In the end we decided to make some clips longer to create an eerie feeling to the title sequence. All that is left to do with the title sequence is the soundtrack to put behind the video which I'm still in the process of making.

Journal 24th January

In the lesson we put on the last bit of footage on the title sequence. We had re-shot footage that didn't work in the of piece, instead of having the mirror and the writing on the mirror we decided that it was too hard to get this done and make it look good so instead we filmed a completely different shot of Scoot on the bed and creating a shadow walking across the back but just having the shadow and no body. I personally think that this works better than the mirror scene as its more creepier with the shadow walking across.

Journal 20th january

In lesson we decided that some of the footage wasn't fitting in with the rest of the clips and the mirror scene didn't look right because the mirror was too small. So we decided that we me and Laura would re-film the last scene in laura's house because she has a bigger mirror which can be used instead. We plan to film at some point this week.

Orphan Title Sequence

This title sequences relates to our version as its has animation of child like drawings included with special effects to make it seen as a high budget movie maybe. The colours used in the title sequence are key to the film and the drawings are huge factor in the film.
At the beginning you can see the logo for the company on a dark background with a flicker of colour onto the screen appears then we move onto the drawings, we can see the drawings are innocent but when the bright colours are added it shows a more sinister and creepy side of how drawings can be manipulated. The music is quite dramatic and creates a seriously tense atmosphere for the start of the movie. The typography seems very simple and plain compared to the animation around the typography.

The Music for the video starts quiet but there is a sudden loud part which draws you into watching the title sequence. Then we here a sound like a beepy noise which instantly makes you look at the screen more to see what has changed. The music then begins to build up and we here a eering and sinister type of sound in the soundtrack of the video. These sounds have been added to create a tense and unsettling atmosphere. It makes you more hooked in with what has become so sinister of the drawings made originally.

The first drawings are drawn like they are photos and a bible which look completely innocent. Then we change to a second drawing of a person, a flicker part happens with fluoresent colours, the colour appears to make the drawing more disturbing.

From the picture above you can see the light is dark and gloomy and themusic helps create the whole view of the animation drawing with the colours on top making it moregraphic on achilds drawing. It then flashes up one more timeand then fades out into black.
In the third image with just have a drawing of a ribbon and then cast names change with the beep sound on the video.

The photos above show the difference of how a childs drawing is manipulated into somethingsinister. The whole image becomes colder and darker. The editing of the bright coloured drawings to the normal drawing could suggest that we are going to see glimpses of something odd at first but obviously becomes very clear that there is something wrong in a way at the end.
The last it we see a dark screen with the light in the middle and having dark edges on the shot. The title of the film appears in a very clear and almost boring typography for a thriller/horror film like this but like the rest of the title sequence there is a flash part with pink and green over the top of the title, the music builds up through out the title sequence and becomes more dramatic and eering to then set the opening scene this keeps the audiences attention throughout the title sequence and into the opening scene.

Journal 17th january

This is the first lesson we would of have back from filming so today we had Hayley and Amy editing the video while Laura and I sorted out the photos for Reece and started the behind the scenes video for evidence of us working. We filmed the title sequence of my camera so we all loaded the photos and video onto our own accounts so that if anything went wrong we always have it backed up. Although we did the filming when we watched some of the footage from the camera it seem that the mirror wasn't big enough so instead we are going to reshoot a scene in Laura house where she has a big mirror to use and easy to make it look like the same location.

Evidence of Reece

There are the stairs that the boys walk up to go into his room.
This again is the same sort of picture but with the lights on.
These are the stairs we intend while filming the boys feet while going up the stairs.

This the desk we intend to use when the boy drew disturbing pictures.
This is the room we intend to film the scenes with the boy and the teddies.

Today we are filming our title sequence around my house. Only me and Laura are needed for the filming as that is our part of the making the titles sequence, but grace is helping with the tripod and props for today.I have asked everyone to be at my house for 3pm so we can set up and plan were to place the camera angles before the boy arrives at 5 pm. Hopefully this should run to plan and nothing goes wrong.

The Omen Title Sequence

The whole title sequence is done in animation. First the audience sees a grave yard with grave stones and misty cloud above, a large grave stone appears with the title of the film and date, this suggests many thing first we know its a spooky horror film with the fact of a grave yarf present secondly the date is a clear detail link with horror as it is 06.06.06 which stands for the devils number 666. The we move onto a green grave yard with tress making the number six which is also clear sign of the devil having a part in this film. From just the part we can clearly see the genre and what the film maybe about. The music starts of light and twinky but eventually slows down with then a loud and dramatic moment drawing the audience into the tile sequence because the music has grabbed their attention.
Meanwhile as the music slow and becomes more involved and dramatic a dark mysterious house appears all in black with lights on shinning through the windows. The whole house is dark and has no a lot of detail to it but that the stereotypical daunting look example the tree in the window creating a scary shadow and the mist over the top of the house and then the gate which appears at the bottom of the screen. These are all clear signs of a haunted house that in a horror film would be normal to have in.
We then move onto the two bits with a rope in the hanging style for the death penalty first there is one alone on a blue background with the titles of the cast and crew. Then two more ropes appears in front of a basic drawing of a church this could suggest that religon is a part of the film and there maybe a conflict with the devil and church judging by the signs of 666 and the church with hanging ropes.
The typography for all the titles are plain and clear in a light yellow colour and a little detail underlining. This is basic and simple but works as the whole title sequence is quiet busy so using something plain and basic make the audience more drawn to this then the busy parts around it mostly.
Finally when the big boom happens in the music a black figure drops onto the screen as if the figure has been hanged, this would make the audience more awake and alert with what is happening. Then we cut to a lightening flicker into the next shot of a carousel with a child on this could suggest that a child is a main part of the film.
Then we see a child riding a bike in the house but at a low angle so we only see the feet and a black outline to make it more mysterious to the audience. We then see a family walking through the house and a creepy monster hand in front of them in the shadow. The monster man with the creepy hands stays on screen while we see shots of the animated version of the house and a coffin inside. The coffin then falls down with blood dripping down the top of the screen, this is all stereotypical things you would expect in a horror film. The last thing we see is faces in the blood and a the creepy hand reaching up from the ground before it cuts to the graveyard again and the title and date of a green background. Through out those scene the music is dramatic and catchy and there is a heat beat that is slow over the music.

11-01-11
Today we went over our story boards and spoke to our teacher about all of our shots, together we decided that we would change the shots of the young boy Harry, to make sure that we do not see his face or his whole body in any one shot - we will only be seeing his feet, hands and back of his bad/back. We are doing this to create an enigma, and to draw the audience in so that they will want to find out who this boy his, and why his character is so dark and .unknown.

As well as this I am going to be making the titles for our title sequence today using dafont.com and photoshop

Production Journal

In our lesson on 06/01/2011, Megan started to look on Garage band at possible sounds for our Title Sequence. The sort of sounds to be featured in our Title Sequence are quite eerie sounds, to make it seem quite dark and sinister. We have also thought about featuring a child breathing.

Also in the lesson, another idea for something that could be featured in our title sequence came about. We were discussing the ending to our Title Sequence, when we stumbled upon the idea of the main character writing a message on a mirror. We would have him actually write on an acetate sheet, so that we can also get a shot, as if the camera is in the mirror. We would put the acetate over the camera lens, and he will write onto it, so that we can see him actually writing it. For the message that is going to be written, we thought about a couple of ideas. At first I thought it would be good to say something quite dark, so I suggested 'it's all her fault' but after discussion, we came up with 'it's all your fault.'

Filming Schedule

Typography

We have been looking into different fronts that we could use for the titles in our title sequence.
The name of our film is "walking with the dead", and as our film is a horror the font will need to be eerie, we also thought about trying fonts that look like a child has written it, or it has been scratched into something.
We use the website "dafont" to try different styles of fonts and this is what we came up with;

Whilst we was looking for fonts for the main titles, we came across type writer fonts that would look good for the titles during the title sequence. Amy and I decided that it would be good if we show the insertion point and the letters being typed into the shot.

Storyboard - Description

Order of Storyboard...

Shot 1: Camera movement is still while the boy walks up the hill. Sound of footsteps (3-4 seconds).
Shot 2: Boys cuts across view of house to walk up the driveway into the house. (3-4 seconds).
Shot 3: Handheld camera follows behind the boy giving the idea that someone is following him. (2 seconds).
Shot 4: Camera shots from other side of door. Show door opening and boy walks in ( walking towards camera). (10 - 11 seconds).
Shot 5: Camera shot of the hallway and the child putting down their school bag
(showing the idea that he comes across as a usual child). ( 5 - 6 seconds).
Shot 6: Boy opens fridge to get something to eat. When the fridge door shuts the titles begin to show. Music changes tone. (2 seconds).
Shot 7: Camera pans in on the fridge and the beginning of the credits. (2 seconds).
Shot 8: The camera (handheld) then follows the child as he walks up the stairs. (7-8 seconds).
Shot 9: Light beams out of the other room and boy runs upstairs into his room which is very dark, camera pans into child's dark room. (5-6 seconds).
Shot 10: BLACKOUT SCREEN. Sound of child breathing. (3 seconds).
Shot 11: Camera starts of an image in which the child is drawing, and then pans onto another image. Then all the images on the wall; disturbing images in which the child has drawn.
(10-11 seconds).
Shot 12: Camera begins to start on individual drawings, which show different names and credits of the film. (10-11 seconds).
Shot 13: Teddy bears which are sitting on the shelf have been changed in some way by the child, such as heads missing. Pan onto one of the teddies to see yet another credit. (5-6 seconds).
Shot 14: Close up shot of an image of his hand destroying the teddies. (5 seconds).
Shot 15: Camera pans from the image of the teddy to the mirror, the other side of the room.
(3 seconds).
Shot 16: Child writes, 'It's your fault' on the mirror, with the reflection of his face at the side of the mirror. (5 seconds).
Shot 17: Someone walks in front of the image of the boys face and text on the mirror, music builds up. (6 seconds).
Shot 18: BLACKOUT SCREEN. Title sequence ends, film begins. (3 seconds).
